What is natural selection? Year 6 Science
This term, children have been learning about Evolution and Inheritance. So far, we have studied the work of Mary Anning and Charles Darwin and learnt about the importance of fossils.
This week, children developed their knowledge of Darwin's theory of natural selection by playing a game that models the process. The game shows that living things reproduce offspring. This is represented by the black lines. We then rolled a dice and, according to the number on the dice, the offspring either inherited characteristics from their parents or they mutated.
Next week, children will be learning what they have learnt to explain the process in more detail.
Active Maths in Year 6 - Outdoor Learning
This week, we recapped our learning from Year 5 with a fun-filled Active Maths lesson!
Despite the cold, we had a great time comparing and ordering decimals outside. We also played a target game where children had to roll dice to create 5 different decimal numbers. The child whose number was closest to 20 won!
This lesson introduced the subsequent maths lessons where children were converting fractions to decimals using tenths, hundredths and thousandths. Children then moved on to using their knowledge of bus stop method to convert more complex fractions to decimals.
Year 5 Orchestra Trip
On the 21st November, Year 5 travelled to the Barbican to watch the London Symphony Orchestra perform Alice Through The Looking Glass.
The children enjoyed singing along to the songs they had learned beforehand and especially enjoyed the orchestra's performance of the Star Wars theme tune.
Year 5 Humanities
In Geography, Year 5 have been learning about maps and navigating.
Today we took our learning outside and used compass points to find clues that revealed a hidden message. We then continued our lesson by using Google Maps to plan a journey to the Migration Museum, where we will be going on our upcoming trip.
