Year 6 Classification Day

We studied the works of Carl Linnaeus’ system of classification; we learnt how he used binomial names to create names for a wide variety of species. We designed our own species of animal and created our own binomial names.

We visited Forest School to try and locate as many different types of trees as possible. Using a checklist, we observed – in detail – the shape, size, colour and detail of the leaves. We collected leaves and categorised them based on their distinguishing characteristics. Were the leaves lobed or toothed? Was the leaf a simple or compound leaf? Finally, we created our own classification key to help others identify and group leaves.

We had a great time observing skeletons and teeth! We used a classification key to find out which teeth belonged to which animal. We were amazed to see the teeth that belonged to a cow – did you know that they are large and flat? We enjoyed comparing the teeth of an alligator to the teeth of a lizard! Did you know that a lizard’s teeth are serrated?

We got hands on with arthropods in our brand new Science Lab! After learning about the distinguishing characteristics of arthropods, we used magnifying glasses to observe a range of arthropods closely. Using what we had learnt, we classified the animals into insects and arachnids.

Did you know that a scorpion is an arachnid?
