RE in Year 6 - P4C

This half term, the students in Year 6 will be learning about the values and beliefs of Humanists. As part of this, each class took part in a Philosophy 4 Children lesson, where they read an interesting story called The Happiness Shirt. The story explored themes of happiness, greed and materialism and worked together to create some 'Big Questions', which were discussed at length. Below, you can see some of their questions and various quotes from the children.

Big Question: Is happiness the purpose of life?

'You only get one life so you have to take chances, have experiences and be happy.'

'If life does not satisfy you, that is not fair.'

'Being satisfied is not the same as being happy; I think it is ok to sometimes just feel satisfied or content.'

Big Question: Is anything more important than happiness?

'My family is more important than happiness because when I am with them, I feel safe. Being safe is more important than being happy.'

'A home is more important than happiness as if you did not have one, you may be unhappy. For some people, religion is more important.'

Big Question: What if something makes you happy but makes others sad? Is that ok?

'You do not need to make decisions for others but you need to be mindful of their feelings.'

'When my friends did not pass their 11+ but I did, I tried not to boast because it would not make them feel happy. I know they were still happy for me though.'
