Year 6 continued their learning about the Ancient Maya by examining the impressive structures they built.
Examining the architecture of the Ancient Maya allows us to appreciate the cultural diversity and
historical contributions of indigenous peoples.
The children learnt that Mayan architecture continues to inspire modern
architects and engineers, offering lessons in sustainable construction, precise
engineering, and innovative design.
The children enjoyed learning about Chichen Itza, one of the most famous Maya archaeological
sites, known for the El Castillo pyramid. During the spring and autumn
equinoxes, the late afternoon sun casts a shadow that creates the illusion of a
serpent descending the pyramid's staircase.
After children learnt about the architecture, they were tasked with designing mini ancient Mayan communities using a range of resources, such as Lego, salt dough, paper and card.
