We have been learning about Shabbat in Year 3, which is a Jewish festival. Shabbat is the celebration of the Sabbath day - the day of rest after God created the world. It is celebrated from sunset on Friday to Sunset on Saturday. When Shabbat begins on Friday evening, everyone puts on their best clothes and gather for a special meal. The Shabbat table will have Challah bread, wine, Shabbat candlesticks and a Kiddush cup. Jewish people recite prayers and worship God during this meal.
We drew our own Shabbat tables and labelled them. We discussed the importance of Shabbat to the Jewish religion and compared it to similar festivals in other religions such as the Sabbath in Christianity.
