Year 4 Victorian Day

Today, Year 4 experienced what it was like to be a child attending school during the Victorian era.

We carried out our lessons in silence, with boys separated from girls and chanted a lot of our learning. Any of the children not meeting the expectations were expected to wear the 'Dunce' hat - a hat worn as a form of humiliating punishment for misbehaving or for failing to demonstrate hat they had properly performed their studies.

In the afternoon, we took on some home skill lessons. The boys built Victorian schools and the girls made delicate lace demonstrating how education for boys and girls was very different.

Luckily, all children were very well behaved and no one needed to be canned! Although the children thoroughly enjoyed learning like this, they were relieved to resume normal expectations.
